Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Afex system work?

There are three main components to the Afex system:  a receptacle, briefs, and a collection bag.  The receptacle is a loose-fitting latex-free and adhesive-free ergonomically shaped device made of two plastics: a hard outer shell to retain the shape and to provide for a loose fit, an a soft liner that does three things:  provides comfort, forms a double wall so the skin is suspended away from any residual urine, and prevents backflow onto the body.  The receptacle is inserted into a front pocket in the briefs and a collection bag is attached through a buttonhole in the briefs.  The bag connects directly to the receptacle with an easy " twist-and-lock" design - there are no tubes or straps that connect to your leg.  The collection bag, which holds 16 ounces (500 ml).  Urine drains from your body, through the receptacle and is collected in the bag.  The bag features a one-way flapper valve which prevents backflow if the bag is compressed or if it is elevated.  When properly used for the correct application, Afex is a comfortable, discreet, convenient, cost-effective alternative to disposable pads and catheters.

Where is the bag situated and how does it stay in place?

The bag is positioned inside the left thigh and stays in place in two way.  1)  Since the bag is directly connected to the receptacle the weight of the bag is transferred to the specially-designed briefs which support the weight of the bag.  2)  If you are in a highly-active mode, you can use our " action tabs"  and attached the bag to the legs of the brief to make the bag more secure and prevent movement of the bag.  Typically, if you are in a low-activity mode, we suggest to not use the " action tabs"  so the bag is lower than the receptacle especially in a sitting position.

How do you drain the urine from the bag?

The collection bag features a " one-touch" drain port the opens and closes easily so you can efficiently drain the contents from the bag.

If I am wearing the Afex system, can you see it through my clothes?

No.  Although it may look bulky from some of the product pictures, it is very discreet as long as you are not wearing tight-fitting pants.

What size does the Afex system come in?

The Afex system is sized according to your waist for the brief.  Briefs come in five standard sizes ranging from 28 inches to 46 inches.  We also take special orders up to a 60 inch waist.  The receptacle is one size since it is designed for a loose fit.

What parts of the Afex system are reusable?

All parts of the Afex system are reusable.  Some components last longer than others, but due to the reusable nature of our system,  you can save up to 50% per year versus disposable absorbent pads.

How often do the reusable parts need to be replaced?

Collection bags should last about 4 weeks.  Receptacles can last up to 90 days.  Briefs should be purchased based on personal preference and frequency of laundering.

Do you wash and dry the briefs just like you normally wash clothes?

Yes,  just follow the instructional label on the brief.

Can I take a nap with the Afex system on?

Yes, as long as you have the system pointed downward so urine can freely flow into the bag and the void volume during your nap will not exceed the capacity of the collection bag.  Keep in mind that the collection bag volume is reduced when not in a standing position.

Do I have to completely disconnect the system in order to have a bowel movement?

No, you do not need to disconnect anything.  Simply lower the briefs as with typical underwear.

Will the Afex system work if I experienced retraction after surgery?

Afex can work if there is at least 1 inch of protrusion from the abdominal wall.  It will not work with fully retracted penis.

Will the Afex system work with a prosthetic implant?

Typically an implant will not allow the penis to bend downward and fit into the receptacle.

If there is a large amount of urine void at night, will the reusable pads be enough or do I still need to use disposable pads?

The Afex pad will hold 12 ounces or 350 milliliters.  If your void volume is higher than the pad capacity, it will not be suitable for your needs.  However,  if you are a stable sleeper,  you may want to try our tube assembly that connects the receptacle to a large capacity bed bag which holds up to 2 liters.

I have a problem with incontinence during the night, not during the day.  Will the Afex system work for me?

The Afex system requires gravity or a downward flow so urine can drain through the receptacle and into a collection bag.  If you are a stable sleeper and can stay in a position in which the shoulders are elevated and downward flow can be achieved,  then we suggest using our tube assembly connected to a large-capacity bed bag.  Another alternative is to use the receptacle and collection bag as a high-tech bedside urinal which will require manually putting the receptacle in place before voiding.  Either way,  we suggest the use of our " high-style" receptacle in any sleeping or horizontal application.

How much does the Afex system cost?

Our Value Pack Starter Kit for ambulatory use contains everything you need to begin managing your incontinence:  2 briefs, 2 receptacles ( 1 high style, 1 low style), 2 collection bags, 1 night pad, a cleaning container, a 30-day supply of cleanser tablets and an instructional video.  The Value Pack Starter Kit is specially discounted and costs $149.95.
